24 Feb

Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.

– Thomas Paine

The more he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons.

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

America is a land of taxation that was founded to avoid taxation.

– Dr. Laurence J. Peter

It is said that those who don’t know talk too much and those who do know talk too little. We talk a great game a lot of the time, but there are fewer who will pause to listen to the stories and take the steps necessary to achieve their own personal greatness. Personally, I would rather watch someone doing than listen to someone talking about the steps which they might or might not have taken.

Take a moment…

To contemplate the reasons behind your own actions, and whether there have been situations where you’ve talked too much and not listened enough. While you cannot change the past, you can change the future to hone yourself to be better and better. After pondering, take on the day.

Your Three Motivational Quotes For Thursday, February 23, 2012

23 Feb

Rough waters are truer tests of leadership. In calm water every ship has a good captain.

– Swedish Proverb

Most people think of leadership as a position and therefore don’t see themselves as leaders.

– Stephen Covey

We should seize every opportunity to give encouragement. Encouragement is the oxygen to the soul.

– Unknown

Granted, through all of the talk of leadership, I have not talked much about the value of being a follower. Being a follower allows you to see the mistakes the leader is making, and steer your own personal course away from those pitfalls. Even if you are a follower and wish to be firmly supportive of a good leader, you should provide the encouragement that others need, because they will help you reach your dreams.

Take a moment…

To think about who needs encouragement around you. Make a note to yourself to be grateful to the one who opens your door or who fixes your car. How about your peers? Is there someone who’s incredibly passionate who needs a sounding board? Make the decision to encourage those people, and take on the day.

in a group of people, there is always a leader. Even if the leader is not publicly acknowledged, there is a leader. Usually, this person is the most charismatic or the most knowledgeable one. We are all mirrors in some way. We reflect upon those who have decided to follow us, and we take some of the shine of those who are around. It took me quite a long time to realize that I was not an island in this world, and that the people around me were the ones who would lift me or sink me. Think of it as modifiers in an RPG – the people around you can enhance or diminish your daily die rolls.

Take a moment…

To think about the people who surround you within your daily life. Are they worth your attention? Are they serving as bad examples? Are they going to help you achieve the goals that you have? Ponder this, then take on the day.

How many times have you not been entirely aware of the situation as it was happening? There have been many situations that I’ve been in where I didn’t see the cues and didn’t see the triggers that others were displaying and ended up sorry for the results. Mindfulness and compassion are necessary traits in a leader, and seeing the large picture isn’t just for the boardrooms.

Take a moment…

To breathe deeply and look at the situations which are happening around you. What does your job look like? What do your thoughts look like? View them objectively, note your reactions, then face the day.
